F’*king Awesome Tech Tips
DATE: June 26th, 2009

First off, Michael Jackson, rest in peace. Undisputed King of Pop. A US$200 Million debt and 50 sold out concerts starting on July 13th. Don’t ever let someone tell you that stress is not a killer. RIP MJ.

I’ve been putting off this post for a while.  I’m sure that most people who frequent this blog spend a lot of time in front for a computer.  These are some tips and tricks for improving your electronic kung fu –

WEB BROWERS –
Lets just end the debate here and now… FIREFOX is the best web browser.

Firefox - http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html
If you are using Internet Explorer (IE) to view this page you’re either over 40 years old or a complete imbecile.  If you’re not over 40 years old do yourself a favour and download FIREFOX it’s free.
Sure, Safari is good on Mac’s; Chrome is a great web browser too as is Opera but the customization provided by the 1000’s of Add-ons to Firefox has them all beaten.

Ever found something you don’t like about a web browser? Well you can find an Add-ons for Firefox that will fix it for you and generally make your life easier online.

Now that you have downloaded Firefox let me get you started with some of the best Add-ons:

Adblock Plus - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
Adblock Plus effective blocks out 99% of advertisements on your web browser, its like they just aren’t there. If you browse the web and you don’t have Adblock Plus you are missing out on a world without advertisements, pop-ups and banners.  Please if you only add one Add-on THIS IS THE ONE TO ADD. Free yourself from advertisements. You won’t believe how much faster the Internet is when you don’t have to load all the adverts on every site.

Xmarks - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2410
Xmarks, formerly know as Foxmarks is available on other browsers besides Firefox now but originally was for Firefox only. This little gem of an Add-on is extremely useful if you have two or more computers that you browse the web with. What this service does is synchronize the bookmarks & passwords between all your computers instantly for free. No more “I saved it on my other computer”, cause with Xmarks its always the same web browser even if it’s a different computer.  You can even access your bookmarks list from any computer via their website http://www.xmarks.com/

Cooliris - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5579
Turn your browser into a FULL SCREEN 3D browser for pictures & video, online and on your hard drive. It hard to explain in words but the usual response from people when they first see it is “WOW”.  With support for image and video intensive sites like – Flickr, Facebook, Google Image Search, YouTube, MySpace, DeviantArt and many others.  Watch the short Demo to understand the power of Cooliris.

CoolPreviews - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2207
Another Cool App that allows you to preview links and images without leaving the current webpage or tab. Move the mouse cursor over the link and blam O a preview of the link or photo will be displayed in a preview pane. You can even preview streaming video links from sites like YouTube.  This is a major time saver online making sure you don’t load pages your don’t want to.

DownThemAll - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201
The only download manager and accelerator you will need built right into your Firefox. This Add-on is great if you download multiple files from sites but find it tedious to click on every single link individually. With DownThemAll you can download everything on a web page at once. Not only does it manage your downloads beautifully but it also speeds up the download times.

Read It Later - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/7661
Read It Later is an Add-on for those who browse the web with a multitude of open tabs. If you don’t know what tabs are please STOP using Internet Explorer, I’ve already told you its crap. Instead of opening every link you find interesting you can mark a link or a page to Read It Later for when you have time to read it. I’ve just started using this Add-on and I find my productivity has increased knowing I can come back to a page later when I don’t have a deadline staring me in face. It like temporary bookmarks they tell you how long ago you marked it and automatically erases the bookmark after you have read it.

I’ve saved the Best for last. This isn’t a Firefox add-on or a web browser. But anyone who uses an FTP or service like sendspace or yousendit will surely appreciate this productivity gem.
There are 1000’s of Add-ons I’ve just given you a few of the best but you can find a solution to pretty much any web browsing problem Firefox add-ons.

DROPBOX - http://www.getdropbox.com

2GB Free online dropbox for Windows, Mac and Linux users, aka everyone.
“Have you ever wished that you could access your files from anywhere? We made Dropbox because we were tired of emailing files to ourselves or carrying around a USB key.”
Sign up for it now it’s honestly amazing and I haven’t touch my FTP program since. It integrates into your OS so troubles with file transfers are so yesterday. Designers and Digital Creative types this service is for YOU.

Ok that’s it from me today, but give me your feed back and comments and ill be back with more F’*king Awesome Tech Tips.

What if the Predator was Gay?

The Predator is one of my favourite Arnold movies of all time, only to be topped by the epic piece of cinematography that is TOTAL RECALL.
